Since inception, Saliba’s has worked hard to provide world-class service to our caregivers and residents and a world-class workplace for our staff.

Established in 1999, Saliba’s started with two employees in the back room of a retail pharmacy in El Mirage. Today, we have more than 215 employees in a 28,000 square-foot building in North Phoenix and an 8,000 square-foot building in Tucson. Over the years, we have stayed on top of industry trends and new technology to ensure we are providing our caregivers and patients with the safest and most affordable packaging while minimizing the risk of error.

We want to celebrate our 20th anniversary by thanking all the residents and caregivers in our communities that have supported us throughout the years. It is an honor and a privilege to serve them, and we look forward to providing outstanding care for many more years.

The Phoenix Rescue Mission, a community that Saliba’s serves, was recently highlighted on the local news asking for help providing water and hygiene products to the homeless population in Phoenix. After seeing the news story, our operations manager, Jen McNulty, notified senior leadership about the Mission’s request and suggested Saliba’s sponsor a drive to help the community with their project.

Both the Phoenix and Tucson locations participated in a two-week drive to collect hygiene supplies and water for the Phoenix Rescue Mission. The below flyer was sent out to all Saliba’s employees to solicit donations. Our employees enthusiastically donated items to help the Phoenix Rescue Mission and our local community.

The flu season is approaching and making sure you are properly vaccinated is important. The flu can have similar symptoms to the common cold but can have deadly consequences with increased risk especially for senior citizens. Those at the greatest risk of developing the flu are children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Vaccination provides a greater chance of avoiding this risk and helps protect those around you.

The National Council for Aging Care and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has some great information available on their websites:

TO OUR COMMUNITIES:

Please send all flu vaccine orders to the pharmacy and we will fill them as the flu vaccine becomes available. If you have any questions, please contact us at (623) 815-8965.

Vaccination protects against serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization and even death. Saliba’s Visits Communities

Saliba’s is scheduling staff members to visit some of the communities we serve to gain a better understanding of the logistics associated with long-term care pharmacy. Last month, Nurse Account Manager Lora Reynolds accompanied Amanda Alexander and Wilmer Ayala to Brookdale North Scottsdale, where they met Executive Director Nicole Southey, observed a medication pass in action and watched the delivery check-in process. Gaining exposure to this perspective of long-term care pharmacy is beneficial to our employees, as it allows them to fully understand how all of our roles contribute to the overall services we provide our customers. Through this experience, our mission to ‘help the caregiver’ and continue providing world class service is reinforced.

New advocacy tool offers lawmaker education about long-term care pharmacy clinical value, benefits

$

0

The below byline authored by Fred Burke was originally published by McKnight’s Long-Term Care News

As every practitioner and advocate within our broader long-term care space knows, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to break through the noise when it comes to engaging with and educating policymakers about the intrinsic value the long-term care community provides. Given the health challenges America faces, including the unprecedented growth in the Medicare population over the next decade, reducing this “knowledge gap” among lawmakers about the important role our community fulfills will become more critical than ever.

Like the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), we in the national long-term care (LTC) pharmacy community find coordinating on-site visits with lawmakers and other influencers to be our most effective advocacy tool. Seeing dedicated caregivers and consultant pharmacists, showing the incredible jobs they do 24/7/365 on behalf of vulnerable seniors, is the most effective way to share our message.

But while on-site lawmaker facility visits are our first preference, this is not always feasible. That’s why our new advocacy tool,  the Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC)’s “virtual facility tour,” is indispensable in ensuring those charged with allocating federal funds and promulgating regulations understand and appreciate the unique value of LTC pharmacies within the rapidly changing post-acute care continuum.

Furthermore, unlike pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) middlemen and other deep-pocketed advocacy groups with millions to spend annually on lobbying and public relations efforts, we must rely upon clever, cost-effective, less traditional communications vehicles to make our case. SCPC’s new advocacy product falls under this mantle.

It is our job to detail both how (LTC) pharmacies operate and their unique regulatory, legal and other requirements vis-à-vis retail and other pharmacy industry groups. Explaining these differences — and why it matters to quality patient care has and will continue to be our top educational priority.

Looking forward, one of SCPC’s top legislative priorities will continue to be establishing a federal statutory definition of LTC pharmacies to replace an antiquated, unworkable patchwork of vague, inconsistent regulations governing their operations across multiple federal agencies. These regulations are confusing and often at odds with each other — presenting conflicting obligations for the LTC pharmacies and consultant pharmacists who serve them. They also present a danger to patients taking upwards of 11-13 medications daily.

A more orderly, determinative and streamlined regulatory structure governing LTC pharmacies in the form of a statutory definition is a logical effort to modernize oversight. This will benefit elderly patients’ while allowing our specialized pharmacy sector to better operate in an increasingly diverse array of settings. Our new virtual tour video series and similar creative efforts will help us accomplish this objective, among others, in the years ahead.

Fred Burke is the chairman of the Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) and president and CEO of Guardian Pharmacy Services in Atlanta, GA.

Saliba’s Tucson Blanket Project Delights Community Residents

A blanket may seem like a simple gift but think about the warmth and comfort your favorite blanket provides when you are cold or lonely. That is what inspired the staff at our Oro Valley location to come together and create homemade blankets for the residents of Family Loving Kare, a group of homes that Saliba’s services.

Our employees enthusiastically donated their time to create no-sew flannel blankets in a variety of whimsical patterns and vibrant colors, allowing residents to choose blankets during a donation event led by members of our team. Not only did the residents love the gifts, but the employees had a great time making them!

You can see by the faces of these residents just how much they enjoyed feeling the comfort of a new blanket!

Saliba’s Sponsors a Cocoa and Crafting Event at Paseo Village Assisted Living

Our customer liaisons, Cathy Wieneke and Desiree Negron, organized and hosted a ‘Cocoa and Crafting’ event during the holidays at Paseo Village, one of our assisted living communities. The team provided crafting supplies to allow residents to make holiday cards for their families and friends. Fellow teammates Ericca Jones, Cody Nabors, Nancy Williams and Jennifer Nabors assisted them with the event.

The residents were able to let their creativity flow as they decorated and wrote notes on their holiday cards. Participating in artistic activities can help keep the mind busy, connect with others and create a feeling of joy during the holiday season. Eager to share their creative projects with family and friends, residents and Guardian staff felt a strong sense of accomplishment and pride at this event.

The residents thoroughly enjoyed the craft project and the hot cocoa and toppings. The Saliba’s team loved hosting the event and spending time with the seniors.
